MOLEX Pow-R-Feed Line . . . Welcome!

For those of you who were wondering why my blog posts have been so minimalist recently . . . it is with great excitement that I would like to announce TransTech’s acquisition of the MOLEX Pow-R-Feed line!  I have been working on the details of this acquisition for quite some time, and it was announced by both companies this week.  Up until this week, we have wanted to keep it relatively confidential, and, since it has been consuming a large amount of my time for the past several weeks, I haven’t really had that much to blog about.

The MOLEX Pow-R-Feed is identical to the AKAPP Multiconductor line that we have been providing for several years, and there is a long history behind how this product got divided and rebranded . . . but I’m not sure that I even understand the whole story.  Through this acquisition, we will be gaining a vast rep and distribution network, and I have already heard from some of the reps who have been representing this product for over 20 years.  I am looking forward to hearing the history of this product line.  Since I have been working on this for a while, I have a pretty extensive task list that needs to be accomplished, but I think it just hit me today how much work is ahead for us.  For now, I just want to say, “Welcome!”  Welcome to the new reps!  Welcome to the new distributor!  Welcome to the new customers!  We are very excited about this transition, we know this product, and we are looking forward to the coming months!

I have been encouraging everyone to take a look at our catalog (http://www.transtech.com/industrial/12-multiconductor-akapp.html) or to contact us directly at (800) 245-4552 with any questions, comments, or concerns.

AIST Experiment

Alright, I’ve got a few shout outs for the AIST show, and then I want to let you know about a little experiment I am planning on trying.  First shout out is to Jhon.  Jhon works in our rails shop.  We keep most of our Marketing stuff (including old crates from shows) in the back of our rail shop.  This morning I found out that I needed to have a piece of our P-40 at the show in case someone wanted to see it.  I spoke with our Sales Manager, and, unfortunately, we did not have any ready accessible.  He told me that there might be some in one of the crates.  Jhon has probably unstacked those crates 3 times in the past week, so I felt really bad making him do it one more time.  So let me just say, “Thanks Jhon!”  I was able to find what I was looking for, and I’m sure the show will be better for it.  My next shout out is to David (Gustav) Gilbertson.  Getting everything ready for shipping was much less stressful this year because of him.  I pretty much gave him a list of things that needed to go in the crate, told him how they needed to look (polished and pretty), and he took care of it!  He even showed some remarkable leadership skills during last minute changes to the design by pulling a few of us into a meeting in order to determine next steps forward.  I’m not even sure I can use words to describe all the work that he put into making this trade show a success.  Finally, one  last shout out goes to the entire TransTech shop.  I know that making these displays takes away from our normal work, and I appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm in helping (this includes designing; building – machining, welding, and assembly; painting; and packaging and shipping).  Our hope is that this show will generate more business!  So that leads me to my experiment.

I want everyone to be able to see how their hard work is paying off.  For that reason, I will be attempting to update our blog daily from the show.  My goal is to do this only from the iPhone.  I want to be at home with the technology, and, when I look at it, it seems pretty easy.  What that means is that my posts will have video and will probably be pretty short.  I downloaded a WordPress App, so, I hope, that this will be an intuitive and enjoyable process.  Stay tuned to see how it goes.  I will begin setting up tomorrow afternoon!

AIST . . . Here We Come!

Hello All!

I wish I had time to devote to a truly fun post!  There are some great pictures I can add (and, hopefully, I will).  This is the last week before we have to ship out the AIST crate.  The display is looking good thanks, in large part, to David Gilbertson (Gustav).  He has been coordinating the building and timeline for the displays, crate, and rail samples.  So far, from everything I’ve seen, it looks great!  I came in this morning with a million things on my mind.  I need to finish the video for the trade show; I need to make name badges; I need to get our rail samples shined, engraved, and repacked; I need to make sure the reps now what to wear; and I need to pack up some stuff.  All that, plus some pressing deadlines for one other project I have been working on.

Before I go (and leave you all picture less), I need to give one shout out.  On Thursday afternoon, we decided that it would be a good idea to order flash drives with our catalogs on them.  I did a bit of research and came across a company called flashbay.com.  They do not have pricing on their website, which usually is a red flag for me.  However, I filled out their form giving them a sense of what I needed.  I received a call within thirty minutes.  We are pretty picky about our logo here (particularly when it is going on something new), so I expected a lengthy back and forth before it was right.  Every time I gave a tweak (even at 9:00 PM at night), I received a proof back within 45 minutes to an hour.  By Friday afternoon, flashbay.com had the proof exactly as I wanted it, they had gotten my data uploaded, and they had agreed to lock the data.  I will receive these flash drives by the end of this week or early next week, and the price is reasonable.  That is just impressive!  There was one final touch of class by flashbay.com that I want to mention.  Friday morning, I was tearing down our display backdrop, and Aaron Cook walked in with a package.  I was not expecting anything, and was pleasantly surprised when I opened it to find that flashbay.com had overnighted me a well-laid-out sample pack (plus some gummy bears, which is always nice).  It is rare that I find a company that really impresses me with their customer service, but flashbay.com has done just that.  If you need any flash drives, please contact Daniel at daniel@flashbay.com.

An Update

Good Morning All!

It has come to my attention that I actually have a bit of a readership, as I have had several folks ask how my trip to Europe went, because they read that I was going on the blog.  Well, it was incredible!  I feel like I know so much more about what we at the Fandstan Electric Group are capable of.  Let me just do a quick day-by-day.

I arrived Wednesday morning at 8:30 AM European time (I flew into Amsterdam, met Ian, and took a two-hour train ride to Schuttorf).  That means it was about 3:30 AM in my body, and, after failing to sleep on the red-eye, there’s nothing like a long day to cure some jet lag!  We arrived at Schuttorf, and had discussions about the American market with a number of Stemmann’s department heads on Wednesday and Thursday.  Thursday evening, Ian left, and I began training with Stemmann on Friday morning.  Stemmann has a marketing department, so I began there.  I was very encouraged by Georg.  He does quite a bit!  He even showed me their Facebook page which included some links to very basic concepts of what our companies do (i.e. a very basic slipring).  It was quite helpful.

Friday afternoon, I took the train back to Amsterdam and flew to Rome for the weekend (I figure, if you have to be in Europe for the weekend, you might as well make it worth your while).  Rome was very cool, and I think I walked between 15 – 17 miles on Saturday.  But this blog is not about that (although, I’d be happy to share pictures with anyone who is interested).

On Monday, I visited AKAPP, and got to meet Jos Baars and the rest of the AKAPP team.  I was facinated by the product line, even though I have worked with it quite a bit.  It is always helpful to see where something is made and hold it in your hand.  I certainly gained a greater understanding and appreciation for the Multiductor and Productor.

I returned to Stemmann on Tuesday and Wednesday to train on Slip Rings, Pantographs, Shoe Gear, Third Rail, Cable Reels, and Conductor Bars (enclosed and open).  I learned so much, and am very grateful to Stemmann for their hospitality.  I don’t think I ever ate a meal alone, and they always made sure I had everything that I needed.

In an effort to be brief, I have decided to not be long-winded.  Suffice it to say, I may have learned more about our product lines through my brief visit to Europe than I have since I’ve gotten here.  I am still chewing on the question of what to do with that knowledge.

When I got back into the office on Friday (yes, I flew home on Thursday and returned to work Friday), I immediately got involved with a few projects.  So much for reflection.

One of those projects is the AIST trade show that is coming up in early May.  I have to admit that it has been a good deal easier to plan this one than the last one; although that scares me a bit.  I can’t help thinking that there must be something I am missing.  I guess we’ll find out.  I have worked a good deal more with the engineering department on this project than I did on the last one.  Brandon Johns, David Gilbertson, and Matt Blouir have been very helpful in getting our displays designed and built, and I think our booth is going to look pretty sweet!  I am also very pleased with the hotel we have booked for this show . . . we won’t be walking 5 blocks like at APTA.  One thing I was a bit shocked about, however, was the price of a pub table and two bar stools.  To rent these for three days was going to be $750.  I purchased the same item from Amazon for $225.  Once you add in shipping to and from the show, it will probably be about $350.  I am continually amazed at the mark up at these shows.  Oh well, that goes with the territory, I suppose.

Well, for me to cover one month in under 1,000 words . . . nay! . . . under 750 words, is quite a feat!  I will let it be at that.

Nevermind, I guess I won’t let it be at that.  Be sure to check out our sister company, Austbreck’s, new website at http://www.austbreck.com.au

Over the past week, I have been working with Ian to plan a trip to Europe to visit and get trained at our sister companies.  So, on March 14th, I will arrive in Amsterdam, head to Stemmann-Technik for Wednesday afternoon and Thursday.  On either Friday or Monday, I will visit AKAPP-Stemmann, and then I will spend Tuesday and Wednesday – and the other day (Monday or Friday) that I do not spend at AKAPP-Stemmann – back at Stemmann-Technik.

I’m really looking forward to this trip.  I am looking forward to meeting Jos at AKAPP-Stemmann and learning more about AKAPP and REDI-Bar.  I am looking forward to learning more about cable reels, festoon systems, and sliprings at Stemmann-Technik as well as spending some time with their Marketing Department.  However, it has been about 4 years since I have traveled internationally, and I have forgotten everything that goes into it.  There’s the passport, the travel arrangements (which alone is a huge deal), the figuring out how to stay in touch, and so much more . . . I’ve forgotten just how much goes into traveling internationally!
